In the spring of 2020, Christians in North Carolina began to pray for a spiritual awakening. It began in Marble, NC, with a 95-year-old preacher named Fred Lunsford, who felt God extended his days to pray for America. He traveled two miles daily to pray in his wife’s prayer garden at the bottom of Lighthouse Mountain. His faithful praying proves “the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (James 5:16). What has happened since is nothing short of a miracle.
Today, over one million people are joining Fred to pray for a spiritual awakening. God continues to use the Praying on the Mountain documentary to inspire others to participate in this prayer effort. Dr. Mathis has written Awakened by God to share Fred’s story and a unique friendship he developed with Bella Branch, an 11-year-old girl who was saved after she watched the documentary. Dr. Mathis also writes about how God has awakened him and many others to remember why they were saved, to return to God’s purpose for them on earth, and to finish their assignment!
