This is especially true of South Louisiana where I grew up, just a stones' throw from the Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, and practically on the banks of the same river that Huck Finn rafted down. As a young boy, my hometown had not really changed that much in all those years, and we could still go out on a summer's day and squint just a bit and watch as Indians threatened the settlers, and listen as Tom Sawyer spoke on the finer points of fence painting.
