Eddie Staub, the founder, a former Auburn University baseball player with a deeply caring heart for children who hurt. Rodney Hudgins is beaten as an infant and nearly killed at the hands of a cruel and unloving father. Eddie and Rodney are locked in separate struggles, one to realize a seemingly impossible dream, the other to break free from the shackles of his life.

He must meet a bank's terms to raise $144,000 in 120 days or lose his dream. Along the way he finds help from the most unlikely sources—the University of Georgia head football coach, a skeptical bank executive and a small, embracing community in Gainesville, Georgia.
Meanwhile, Rodney fights, then runs, from a world that has left him battered and lonely. Depressed and near suicide at age fourteen, he reaches out to Eddie in a last-ditch effort to save his shattered life of poverty and abuse.
