Conveyed by the underground railroad, which the author has rendered as a literal mode of transportation, Cora travels from Georgia, to South Carolina, to North Carolina, to Tennessee, and finally to Indiana. Dogged every step of the way by a legendary slave catcher, Cora bears witness to multiple atrocities. She tries to hold on to her hope for a better life.
Cora is a third-generation slave who has lived on a Georgia plantation since she was born. She's had to fend for herself since she was about 10, when she was abandoned by her mother. Her master is James Randall, who runs half of his family's plantation. His cruelty pales in comparison to that of his brother Terrance, who's been beating slaves since he....
