Sinopse

In this debut novel and series starter, the last member of a murdered House searches for a missing nobleman, and uncovers clues about his own tortured past.

Rune Saint John, the last child of the fallen Sun Court, is hired to search for Lady Judgment's missing son, Addam, on New Atlantis, the island city where the Atlanteans moved after ordinary humans destroyed their original home.

With his companion and bodyguard, Brand, he questions Addam's relatives and business contacts through the highest ranks of the nobles of New Atlantis. But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court. In looking for Addam, can Rune find the truth behind his family's death and the torments of his past?

This book is an insanely good read!

I must say, I don’t usually write longer reviews anywhere, because I believe there are many talented, capable people who can express their opinion way better than I can in here. This book, however, deserves EVERY SINGLE PRAISE. And I couldn’t help but notice there is no review in here.

If you are looking for a very well built fantasy universe, filled with relatable characters, interesting magic systems and a powerful mix between modern day concepts and technology without losing the special historical fantasy aspect, look no further! This book is here, it’s queer and may I say: it does deliver!!

Indeed, the Last Sun appeared as a recommendation to me two or three times before I decided to pick it up, but the moment I did, I realized I’d made the right choice. Oh boy, this book (the whole trilogy honestly) kept me at the edge of my seat, all while being heart-warming, insanely smart and very plot-driven.

To say the book is plot-driven is not a way of saying the relationships don’t matter in the story. OH THEY DO. They matter so so much. This book is a fresh take on friendships, imperfect characters and the found family trope. Honestly, it is very well done. Rune is a witty, smart, crafty and relatable character (despite being very powerful). He brings the story to life through his eyes and thoughts and the journey is even better because he is a very good MC (at some points I got some Aelin vibes if you know what I mean).

Brand is the glue that ties the story (and our protagonist) together, all while giving us a great take on masculinity that doesn’t involve losing one’s vulnerability or emotions.

And I do hope we will learn more about Addam on the next installments as well, bc he is very instigating.

K. D Edwards also brought a refreshingly take on queer rep. It was done in such a natural and organic way that sometimes I even forgot it was a thing (I mean, I wish we could all live in a universe where being queer was so natural as it was in this book).

The romance is slow-burn, so heads up on that. However, the book is more than capable on standing on its own. The story is beautifully intricate and it is clear a lot of effort went into building a cohesive magical universe.

If you like DnD, this book if for you. If you don’t, though, not to worry, you will still be able to follow the characters as they explore New Atlantis.

I did take me a little while to connect with the book in the begging (until around 20%), mainly bc I was a bit lost at first haha, but the rest of the story made everything more than worth it. It may take you some time to warm to some of the characters but I guarantee it, you will. You will probably feel happy, sad, shocked, devastated and intrigued throughout the story, only to realized that you heart might not leave this read completely untouched. The feelings are worth it though, as you journey through this adventure wanting to hold the hand of everyone in Rune’s found family.

Thank you K.D Edwards, thank you for putting this book out into the world. Thank you for breaking my heart, putting it together and repeating the cycle a few times throughout the trilogy. I can’t wait for book four.

Ps: I first read the book on a hardcover and later (after a few months) decided to listen to it. The performance is amazing and I feel like the narrator really does bring every character to life!!! It was really really well done.

urban fantasy masterpiece

i don't even know where to start. writing is amazing, fun, dynamic, with dialogue that sounds natural, and very (very) loveable characters. the lore is absurdly intricate, and if i have 1 criticism to this book it's that lore is actually so intricate that sometimes it gets a little difficult to follow. but overall, it's a good enough arc that builds itself around character development, with interesting relationships and great dialogue. action scenes are very well described and dynamic, although some of them dragged too long for my personal taste.
overall, it was a great experience. especially with josh hurley's voice acting. his voice is so soothing i could listen to him everyday forever lmao. he really did bring these characters to life.

ps. beware of some triggering subjects, like detailed descriptions of previous sexual abuse, many many deaths through the whole story, and a lot of gore.
