Cori and her friends Jem and Tarn travel to the island of Mutemount to find the next piece of armour that Cori needs to step into her power as Champion of Aquinta. There they meet the island’s people, who have been trapped inside Mutemount’s enormous extinct volcano by monsters called leviathans. However, the leviathans consider themselves caretakers of their ecosystem and believe that they must stop humans from destroying the land.?
