  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.31 - The State of Resilience in 2025? Are you ready for another outage?
    Feb 27 2025

Welcome back to DevOps Decrypted, where, in our first show of the year, we discuss the State of Resilience 2025, a new report from Cockroach Labs. We used it as a springboard for a deep discussion on cyber security, the CrowdStrike event of 2024, and the increased awareness around digital resilience.

Jobin, Laura, and Matt discuss the return of on-prem and data centre repatriation, the tyranny of "all the apps", and vendor lock-in. This fascinating topic highlights just how easily the complex systems we rely on can crumble with just one small point of failure.

So – are you ready for the next CrowdStrike? Listen in now, and if you want to share your experiences with us, email us at DevOpsdecrypted@adaptavist.com.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.30 - Key takeaways from the CrowdStrike downtime
    Dec 3 2024

In this lighter episode of DevOps Decrypted, Jon and Jobin meet to discuss a heavy subject: the massive CrowdStrike outage of summer 2024. Everyone in tech (and many outside of the industry) remembers the day it happened. But what have we all learned from it?

Well, we might have the answers. Adaptavist surveyed more than 400 participants from medium and large organisations, all of whom were affected by the CrowdStrike outage. Some of the results are pretty thought-provoking. Jon and Jobin run through the findings of our exclusive report, revealing what actions have been taken since—and whether they'll be enough to survive the next inevitable crisis.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.29 - Modernising legacy systems: A deep dive into BetaNXT's journey
    Oct 31 2024

In this episode, our Adaptavist panel is joined by a very special guest – Frank Merla from BetaNXT. Together, we discuss an extensive business transformation case study that we carried out at BetaNXT, the complexities of transitioning from legacy systems to a modernised, scalable platform, and how, in the end, it all comes down to people.

Frank shares BetaNXT’s journey, highlighting the challenges of driving change across multiple business units with distinct processes and long-standing workflows. We discuss the importance of having internal champions to encourage adoption and reflect on the impact of AI tools and security considerations.

This episode goes deep into Adaptavist’s approach to organisational transformation, and how frequently incorporating valuable insights from a hands-on client such as Frank at BetaNXT will lead to a successful transformation.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.28 - Have we completed DevOps? Did we defeat the final boss?
    Sep 27 2024

In DevOps Decrypted episode 28, we're all feeling a little… meh. Why? Maybe it's all the stagnant innovation, monopolising, and open-source rug-pulling. Whatever it is, it's got Rasmus (today's stand-in host) a little down in the dumps.

To lift him out of his funk, he’s joined by Jon and Matt, who discuss the current state of DevOps and the technology landscape. What's going on with the stalled evolution of the iPhone, with software versioning – and with monopolistic cloud services? Has the whole tech industry reached a plateau in innovation? Maybe less rapid innovation is a good thing, and stable, incremental improvement is what we really need. Join us as we talk through our tech troubles and try to overcome our overwhelming ennui.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.27 - DevRel - humanising DevOps, with insight from Google's Jennifer Davis
    Jul 25 2024

Welcome to this "minisode" edition, with Rasmus, Jon and our special guest, Jennifer Davis – Google Engineering Manager and author of Effective DevOps and Modern System Administration.

Of course, we're talking about CrowdStrike… But from a different perspective, the human one. It's all too easy to get caught up in the technical nuts and bolts of an issue like this one, but Jon and Jennifer remind us that, at the core of this outage, there are people. And some of them are going to be having a pretty tough time right now.

Join us as we discuss the human element in DevOps and how there can never be "one” solution to rule them all. Then, listen to Jennifer's insights on DevRel and community. It's a fascinating discussion, and we're keen to get Jennifer back to learn more.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.26 - DevOps-Specific AI Beds In
    Jun 28 2024

Is AI finally in a place where it's useful in DevOps? It might just be, as we discover in another fascinating panel discussion from the usual DevOps Decrypted gang – plus special guest Lilly Holden.

Lilly joined us to speak about her role in the Platform Team at Adaptavist, where she's working on a DevEx initiative aimed at de-complexifying Kubernetes. It's no coincidence that we're doing this episode as Kubernetes celebrates its tenth anniversary—it gives us a chance to look back over its history and try to figure out where it all got so complicated…

We discuss what humans will do when AI does all the things (including whether Jobin is secretly a great poet), how open source started closing doors – and whether DevEx and security are best left to us humans or to machines.

This was a super fun episode, and we'll be sure to have Lilly back to update us on her DevEx journey. Stay tuned for more, and please give us your feedback on the show at devopsdecrypted@adaptivist.com.

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.25 - Automating Observability, and Safety in Open Source
    Apr 26 2024

It's episode 25 of DevOps Decrypted – and we're talking about some big news in DevOps. It was recently revealed that a backdoor had been intentionally planted in XZ Utils, an open-source data compression utility available on almost all installations of Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

We talk about the ramifications and ask, surely things would be better if they weren't open source? We'll let Rasmus stew on that one for a bit… The conversation leads us to the importance of observability and alerts, and we circle back to a past episode about SBOMs. We wrap up with some events on our calendar, including Team 24 – and as always, we're eager to hear your feedback.

Tell us what you think of the show at devopsdecrypted@adaptavist.com!

  • DevOps Decrypted: Ep.24 - The Money Management Episode: FinOps, People and Process
    Apr 2 2024

    Money, money, money…

In this episode, we're talking about how we've enabled FinOps at Adaptavist with CloudZero as a way to highlight anomalous spending through simple chatbots and give teams a sense of cost ownership.

We've got Chalky on as our special guest, talking to Rasmus, Matt and Laura about the inevitability of overprovisioning at the start of a new venture, controlling Kubernetes through Crossplane – and the concept of efficient scaling.

There's a lot to unpack – but while it's all about money, the heart of the matter comes down to linking people and process, through FinOps.

If you like what you hear, or wish something would change about the podcast, we’d love to know! Please give us your feedback on the show at devopsdecrypted@adaptivist.com.
