On this day in 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court issued its landmark Goodridge decision, making Massachusetts the first state whose highest court required recognition of same-sex marriage. The decision reframed the national discussion around marriage equality and helped set the legal path that culminated in nationwide marriage recognition years later.

On this day in 1811, the U.S. Senate confirmed Joseph Story to the Supreme Court at just 32 years old—the youngest justice in American history. Serving 34 years, he shaped foundational doctrines in federalism, judicial review, commercial law, and constitutional interpretation. His Commentaries on the Constitution remain essential to constitutional scholarship.

Since Mike is an entertainment lawyer, let’s learn about an important entertainment historical anniversary today

On this day in 1928, Mickey Mouse debuted in Steamboat Willie, one of the earliest synchronized‑sound cartoons. Its success launched the Disney legacy and changed animation forever. November 18 is still celebrated as Mickey Mouse’s official birthday.

The original version of Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie is now in the public domain, meaning its copyright has expired and it can be used freely for creative works.

Now, it wouldn’t be an In Legal Terms if I didn’t talk about voting. Cause a lot of us need to in two weeks! Hinds County has a runoff election Dec. 2nd so does Rankin County. Do you have one? You can check the Secretary of State’s website: yallvote.ms and click on My Election Day

Do you need an absentee ballot? To verify eligibility for absentee voting, Mississippians may utilize the Secretary of State's Y'all Vote website, which includes an Absentee Voting FAQ and Step-by-Step Guide to Absentee Voting, or contact their county Circuit Clerk. If eligible, ballots will be provided upon request by your Circuit Clerk. But there are lots of reasons you can vote early by absentee voting.
