    TRANSCRIPT:

David : Hello everyone. I’m David from Perfectly Spoken and in this podcast we are exploring the legend that is St Valentine.
Every year on February 14th, people all over the world celebrate love. But do you know why?
Today I’m joined by Stephanie who knows a lot about love. Hello Stephanie
So presumably the story all started with a man named Valentine didn’t it?

Stephanie: Yes. That’s right. St. Valentine was a priest in Rome, many, many years ago—about 1,700 years ago! At that time, the emperor, Claudius II, said that soldiers could not get married. He thought married men were not good soldiers. But Valentine believed in love, so he secretly helped soldiers get married. When the emperor found out, he was furious, really angry and put Valentine in prison.

David: On no. poor Valentine. What happened to him there?

Stephanie: Well, it’s not all bad news for Valentine because while he was in prison, he became friends with the jailer’s daughter. Some say he even fell in love with her. Before he died, he wrote her a letter and signed it, “From your Valentine.” And that’s how the tradition of sending Valentine’s cards began!

David: Wow! How romantic. So, if Valentine lived today, I wonder what his life would be like?

Stephanie: Very different for sure. Maybe he would use social media to spread love! Can you imagine him on Instagram or TikTok, helping couples and giving relationship advice? Maybe he would have a YouTube channel called "Valentine’s Love Tips!"

David:: Haha! That would be fun! And speaking of love tips, let’s talk about Valentine’s Day today. People celebrate by giving gifts like flowers, chocolates, and cards. Why is that do you think?

Stephanie: Well, red roses are a symbol of love, chocolates make people happy, and cards help people say sweet things to each other.

David:: That’s true! It’s all about showing love and appreciation. Some people also give teddy bears, jewellery, or even plan romantic dinners..

Stephanie: Exactly! But remember, Valentine’s Day is not just for couples. You can show love to your friends, family, or even yourself. Buy yourself some chocolate—why not?

David: Great idea. Yes! And don’t forget to spread love and kindness every day, not just on February 14th.
That’s all for now. Thanks for listening, and Happy Valentine’s Day!
