The move is seen as an attempt to stack the Fed with members who are inclined to lower short term rates. Lowering short-term interest rates in an environment of rising inflation tends to cause long-term rates to move higher, which can negatively impact the markets. The Fed's Jackson Hole event starts today; this event is expected to have significant policy implications for inflation, growth, and central bank strategy going forward.
