Public Address: YACHT ROCK + HIGH FIVE

Picture it now: you’re lounging on a swish luxury boat as it bobs along the blue ocean water, sipping cocktails and improving your tan. Oh - and it's the 1980s. There's only one style of music that goes with this image: Yacht rock. Just what is Yacht rock, you might well ask?

Also known as the West Coast Sound or adult-oriented rock, it's a style of soft rock from between the late 1970s and early 1980s that featured elements of smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk, rock and disco. An amazing genre that makes us feel like we're in an episode of Miami Vice wearing shoulder pads and massive sunglasses.

The term yacht rock refers, in part, to a stereotypical yuppie yacht owner, enjoying smooth music while sailing, sniffing copious amounts of cocaine and swilling ice-cold champagne. So whether you’re docked for the summer or about to set sail on an adventure, allow this edition of Public Address to steer you in the right direction with the definitive yacht rock playlist. Plus later in the programme another High Five with a special guest from the creative arts, choosing five tracks of personal significance to them.
