One of the most useful ways to understand migration is through the push-pull model.
Push factors are conditions that encourage or force people to leave their home country or region.
Pull factors are conditions that attract people to a new destination.
In reality, migration decisions are usually influenced by a combination of both.
For example, a young person from a rural village might leave because there are few employment opportunities at home (a push factor) while being attracted by the prospect of higher wages and better education in a city (a pull factor).
Let’s explore these factors in more detail.
