James Jennings Interview

On February 13, 2022. Super Bowl number 56 with the LA Rams vs the Cincinnati Bengals at home in LA in the new Rams SoFi Stadium; Inglewood with the half time show featuring Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre!. It's also the day before St. Valentine's Day, but more importantly this year marks 20 years since Waylon Jennings left this world. He was only 64 years old and died due to diabetic complications. But he had one hell of a life. Played bass guitar for Buddy Holly, gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight the day music died. He lived on to pioneer the Outlaw Country movement. And along with Willie, his wife Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser was featured on country music's first platinum album, "Wanted! The Outlaws." He was the Balladeer for The Dukes of Hazzard TV show. And later Waylon part of the country supergroup The Highwaymen with Willie, Kris Kristofferson, and the man in black Johnny Cash. Waylon sold over 40 million albums, the man needs need no further introduction.

Today we have with us, James Jennings, you are the last living brother of Waylon Jennings. Hey James!

Great seeing you this week at your store and chatting with you.

Like many men my age, I loved Dukes of Hazzard! Watched it every Friday night following the show that my parent's would watch, Dallas. I had a little 33 record of Waylon singing the "Theme From The Dukes Of Hazzard - Just Good Ole Boys". I would place the needle on that record and time it to the TV show when is started and let the record play along with Waylon Jennings as The Balladeer. Even had the now Vintage 1982 Holy Grail of Power Cycles, the Dukes Of Hazzard General Lee Big Wheel from Coleco complete with the stars and bars and all.

Although I was only able to see the man live in concert once at the Willie's 4th of July Picnic in Luckenbach in 1996 with Willie, Waylon and the Boys. Your brother along with his music made a big impression and me and so many others.

James, I've met you before at your Waymore's Liquor Store and then again this past Monday, right there in your hometown of Littlefield, TX, just West of Lubbock near the panhandle. You were so kind and gracious to show my family around your store and what is the only Waylon Jennings museum in existence in the back your Waymore's Package Store. How did that come about, why did you start the Waylon museum there in Littlefield?

The store is located 30 minutes West of Lubbock, in the small town of Littlefield, smack dab in the middle of town sits Waymore's Liquor Store and Waylon Jennings Museum at 901 Hall Ave Littlefield, TX 79339.

Meat Loaf has expired at the ripe age of 74, this past Thursday January 20th, 2022.

His name is Robert Paulson. As heard in the David Fincher directed movie released in 1999 and based off of the Chuck Palahniuk novel. The movie has become a cult classic after it's release to DVD. That's where I first watched it. The only movie that I started over and watched again for a second time, right after watching it for the first time. Meat Loaf played Bob who Edward Norton's character meets in a testicular cancer support group, but who later joins Fight Club. Upon his death, at the insistence of Edward Norton's character and then repeated by the goons after Bob's death during "Project Mayhem":

David Roach, lead Singer for rock band Junkyard. Hailing of Los Angeles, California. Hollywood. Comin up in East Hollywood, off of the Sunset Strip back in the day along with Jane's Addiction and Green River who would go on to become Pearl Jam. Playing those bars and clubs around there in that whole scene. Junkyard would sign with Geffen Records and release 1989’s “Junkyard” album with singles such as “Hollywood” and “Simple Man’ and getting heavy rotation with videos on MTV. The Black Crowes opened for you. There are famous photos of both Axl and Slash of Guns N’ Roses wearing the iconic Junkyard in triplicate and Junkyard logo and the Junkyard Hollywood shirts.

The Master of Time and Space, Leon Russell from Tulsa, Oklahoma passed away 5 years ago today at the age of 74.
Leon played the piano, among other things. In the 60's, he was a part of the legendary set of studio musicians, known as the Wrecking Crew. Performing with a who's who, including The Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison and also along with others in the likes of Bob Dylan, Badfinger, and many more.

Other musicians started finding his music and recording them and making hits with his songs. Like Delta Lady, from Joe Cocker. The song I only really started to dig when watching him recorded live in the 70's, in the documentary "A Poem is a Naked Person". The documentary was only released in 2015 at South by. For 40 years, the film went unreleased. It features Leon live and onstage in his heyday. And that's where I really got to see the man shine as a live performer. The rest of them film is Leon bouncing around Oklahoma, his recording studio, The Church Studio in Tulsa recording country and western album "Hank Wilson's Back Vol 1" under the moniker of Hank Wilson. He would end up releasing 4 volumes over his career under the alias.

The documentary also showed Leon building a house and hiring a young artist, Jim Franklin, to paint his pool with his own psychedelic art, before it is filled with water. Jim Franklin would become known for his posters, around the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin and featuring Armadillos. Now there stands a full life sized bronze statue of Leon Russell in his signature top hat, and with his beard and longhair, it is located outside The Church Studio, commissioned by non-other than Jim Franklin.

His most well-known song would most likely be "A Song for You" off of his first album on his own Shelter Records, a record company that he started, the album was release in 1970. Many artists have recorded it over the years. Willie did a version in 1973 with just him and Trigger. The song closed out the "Shotgun Willie" album, the first to feature his guitar Trigger. But one of my favorite versions is from Ray Charles. He recorded it in 1993, but the live version he did that same year for Willie's 60th Birthday Party is my favorite. There is another version out that for another Willie special, featuring him along with both Ray Charles and Leon Russell. But now let's hear the man do it how he does it on his piano, here is "A Song For You" with the lines "I love you in a place where there's no space or time", but these are the words on his own gravestone, his own lyrics from the song: "And When My Life is Over, Remember When We Were Together, we were alone and I was singing this song for you":

The last song on the "Shotgun Willie" album, the first album to feature Trigger. Trigger would again appear on Willie's next album "Red Headed Stranger" and then again for all the rest of his albums from that point on.

I was lucky enough to see Leon many times.

Warrant a glam metal band from Hollywood California, hit it big in the late eighties. Right out of the gates off of Sunset Strip with their debut album, 1989's "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich", D.R.F.S.R., also a song on the album. First single off the album, was "Down Boys". But the second single was the ballad "Heaven"; it went to #2. It was denied the #1 position by Milli Vanilli's "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You", so in hindsight, if the Grammy can be stripped from Milli Vanilli, seems that Heaven should be rewarded with the #1 spot. The album spawned other hit singes as well, "Big Talk" and another ballad "Sometimes She Cries". And a fan favorite, "32 Pennies" in a Ragu jar...

The band consisted of former Plain Jane band members Jani Lane on vocals and Steven Sweet on drums. Along with Joey Allen on lead guitar, Erik Turner on rhythm guitar, and Jerry Dixon on bass.

The following year in 1990, they would release their follow-up to "D.R.F.S.R.", "Cherry Pie". The title song "Cherry Pie" is the song that would define the band, even bigger than the success of "Heaven".

The song was a last minute addition, due to record management insistence to have a new sort of 'rock anthem' added to the album for marketability of the new record. So, Jani sits down and pens the track in 15 minutes.

This is one of the rare cases of a Music Exec being right, but it was Jani's brilliance that made this tongue in cheek song such a mega hit!

The other bandmates weren't even around the studio at the time, so it was recorded like much of the album and like "D.R.F.S.R.", with studio musicians... this I just learned. And they even work in the title to their previous album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich"!

Although, it is commonly known that the 'trained professional' reference is to none other than C.C. DeVille of Poison. CC is responsible for those licks and solo in Cherry Pie. This didn't help much with all of their comparison's of sound and appearance to Poison or due to the fact that they were touring partners.

But "Cherry Pie" would be the song that Jani would come to resent and hate.

It you google "Jani Lane ha", "tes Cherry Pie" comes up and autofills in the search bar for "Jani Lane hates Cherry Pie".

He regretted writing the song, because he felt that it delegitimized him as a songwriter. That and that we would be remembered for this one song, "Cherry Pie". He shared his disdain about the song on a VHI interview, by saying "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song". He hated that he would be known for that song and be forever known as, the "Cherry Pie guy".

Rockin' Randall Hank Williams Jr., the son of legendary Hank Williams, he had a lot to live up to, and he did it, and then some. He has sold over 70 million albums and won CMA Entertainer of the Year 5 times, that and a whole lot of other accolades. Hank Williams has come to be known as a person who speaks his mind. Better or worse.

You might know him from the theme song for the NFL's Monday Night Football. It was based on his 1984 hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight", it ran for decades!

His daddy before him had a hard drinkin' hard livin' life and so did Hank Jr., as well as his son Hank III, let's start things off with "Family Tradition":

That was my personal favorite, "Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound". And more about the "Family Tradition" that preceded that song. Shelton Hank Williams, known as Hank III, his son is now performing as the next generation Hank, Coleman Williams as simply IV. He just released his debut music this past April. And there is also Jett Williams, Hank Jr's step-sister. And Holly Williams, Hank III's half-sister, I love her 2014 song, "Waiting on June".

That was "A Country Boy Can Survive", one of Hank Jr's most enduring hits and a fan favorite.

Bocephus as known by many and the name given to him by his daddy. Named Bocephus after Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield's ventriloquist dummy. Hank Sr. died at a young age and when Hank Jr was only 3 years old and raised by his mother Audrey. Here is "My Name Is Bocephus":

Audrey, Hank Jr's mother had him performing his daddy's hits all over the country and Hank Jr. resented being known as an impersonator of his father. He tried putting his own songs into his live sets of his daddy's songs, but the crowds were not pleased as they had come to hear Hank Williams songs. He would start changing his style and coming into his own despite the crowd reaction.

Hank was almost killed in 1975, during a mountain-climbing accident in Montana, where he fell 500 feet. After taking years off and many surgeries, he returned more focused and what would become his career defining period. When he reemerged he had grown a beard and started wearing sunglasses and a Cowboy hat, this would become his signature look. Here is a song made popular again by Alan Jackson on his 1999 covers album, "Under The Influence", here is Hank doing "The Blues Man":

Times are good around Austin and the Country... interest is down and the Stock Market's up; and let's pray that it stays that way. But it was during what is now known as the Great Recession that Bocephus released his last big single and I love it. I doubt I'll hear it tonight, so we will play it now, this is "Red, White & Pink-Slip Blues".

Cinderella, the band, if googling, obviously named prior to any future insight on how search engines might work.

They may have had a real Cinderella story, in this fairytale the band was 'discovered' by none other than Jon Bon Jovi in a club in their hometown of Philadelphia. Jon was able to help them secure a record deal.

Recently, Tom Keifer did go on the record in an effort to set the record straight and has stated that a couple years before Jon Bon Jovi took interest in the band, Gene Simmons of KISS had initially found them and got attention of the Polygram record label. But they weren't signed. It was only after Jon Bon Jovi again came to that same record label of Polygram that they took another look at Cinderella and signed the band.

The band consisted of Tom Keifer of vocals, lead guitar, and a variety of other instruments. Eric Brittingham on bass, the standout blonde guy in the otherwise black hair metal band. Where the singer did not have to have blonde hair. Jeff LaBar on guitar, and Fred Coury on drums. And all would lend backing vocals. This was Cinderella.

And a good friend went on the "Monsters of Rock Cruise" in 2014 with a ton of other 80's bands on what would certainly have been an incredible time. He would see what would come to be the final performances Cinderella would ever perform together as a group.

It was reported last week that longtime touring keyboardist for Cinderella, Gary Corbett had died. He also played on Cinderella's "Hot And Bothered" that was featured on the Wayne's World movie and also on their final album. Previously he was a keyboardist for KISS. Don't recal a KISS keyboardist? Me either, they kept him in the shadows along with other musicians and only featured the main four KISS members on stage. It was his job to fatten up the guitar and overall sound. He did a lot, he also wrote "She Bop" for Cyndi Lauper.

It was Lung Cancer that had advanced and spread to his body.. He died just short of his birthday the following day. I've seen that many times in my own life, when somebody is so sick, they try and hold on to a certain date that is meaningful to them. My grandfather waited until his anniversary with my grandmother. My father-in-law just lost a short battle with cancer and will be missed by our whole family, we miss you Papa Terry.

But it would also be reported on the same day, that longtime Cinderella guitarist, Jeff LaBar, had also passed. It was believed to have been alcohol related, as he had had many troubles in the past and often blamed as the reason that Cinderella would not reunite. This was a sad day for Cinderella, family, and fans.

Rest in Peace Jeff LaBar and Gary Corbett.

Dangerous Toys hailing from right here in Austin, Texas. Today being March 2, 2021, Texas Independence Day and my fraternal brother and Governor who declared today the end of all COVID-19 Restrictions. Also, as we head into Spring Break when this town would normally become ground zero for the best place to be on the planet; for the all encompassing South by Southwest Conference and Festivals. But this cannot be as last year it was abruptly cancelled just days before it was scheduled to kick off. Now in 2021, it will be a scaled down virtual event; with keynote speaker Willie Nelson.

But it was in 1988, only in the second year of SXSW, that Dangerous Toys would be signed to Columbia Records after a publishing representative had spotted them playing a live show.

"The Toys", would release their debut album "Dangerous Toys" the following year. The video for their first single "Teas'n, Pleas'n" was on heavy rotation on Dial MTV and Riki Rachtman's Headbanger's Ball. As a teenager in Texas we were so full of Texas pride to see Texas flags hanging behind the band on the stage and all of the cowboy imagery like a cow skull with the state of Texas painted on it. And in their next video for "Scared", lead singer Jason McMaster is sportin' leather pants painted up like the Texas flag, so damn cool!

But there is yet one other reason that we are here today and not only celebrating Texas and the 'The R*tist 4*merly Known as Dangerous Toys', but also to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the release of their follow-up album "Hellacious Acres", on this date in 1991.

Anyhow, back to our story...
The first song off of "Hellacious Acres" was a song called "Gunfighter" and just recently, found footage has emerged out of an attic deep in South Austin. It was published just today on Youtube and you can find the link in the description of this episode:
