Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson help an old friend search for a missing family member. Weeks later, Inspector Lestrade calls them to a suspicious death. Finally, a telegram summons the pair to Paris. These three seemingly unrelated incidents lead the detective to uncover an international mystery that stretches across the borders of three countries, dominated by deception and death. Holmes and Watson join forces with the Paris police to investigate a series of arson fires and three deaths that lead them to murder.

Charity Buntington's husband describes his wife as the most lovely and inoffensive person, whom nobody would want to hurt. But someone enters their home in broad daylight, strangles her, then cuts off and takes away her right forefinger. Inspector Hopkins asks Sherlock Holmes to help him investigate the case, but Charity's friend Aurora Jones is also a private detective, and wishes to help bring her friend's murderer to justice. Holmes is impressed with Jones' skills, and although Hopkins is reluctant, he agrees to let Miss Jones assist in the case under Holmes' guidance.

Since Sherlock Holmes first learned of the sinister house of ruthless criminals, his focus has been two-fold; stop the organization from accomplishing any more ruinous felonious acts and, more importantly, uncover the criminal genius behind the whole enterprise.

In the late 1800's and early 1900's, the usefulness of consulting detectives in the war against crime was very well established by Mr. Sherlock Holmes. By the early Twentieth Century, Holmes had retired to Sussex, and the void he left behind in London was capably filled by a number of other noted criminal specialists: Solar Pons, Hercule Poirot, Dr. John Thorndyke, Father Brown, Albert Campion, and Lord Peter Wimsey, to name a few. But another who made a name for himself with his unique skills tends to receive less attention today: Max Carrados.

When Holmes receives a letter from a girl whose brother has disappeared, Emily is struck with the sense that she has heard Nicole Camberwell's name before. When they arrive in the North Yorkshire town of Rosedale Abbey, Emily recognises Nicole from the Dmitri Koval crime scene. With the discovery of Simon Camberwell's body, the group is thrown into a thick plot tied to the nearby lead mines and local superstition.

From 1913 to 1934, mystery readers were treated to Carrados' published adventures in the form of twenty-six short stories and one full-length novel. In his time, Carrados was one of the most popular detectives in literature. The July 1924 issue of The Strand contained a new Sherlock Holmes story - but it was the announcement of a new Carrados adventure that decorated the magazine's cover.

An "Old Money" Family Meets MurderShakespearean scholar and philanthropist Ezra Bainbridge, patriarch of one of Erin, Ohio's wealthiest old families, lives quietly and happily at his Stratford Court compound with three triplet daughters until accusations of elder abuse roil the family. Amateur sleuth Sebastian McCabe and his friend Jeff Cody are drawn into the controversy as objective observers but are soon ensnared in a puzzling series of horrendous murders, each one of which is marked by the presence of a flower.

Given Sherlock Holmes' protracted sojourn in Tibet, is it any surprise that he was aware of Tantric sexuality, enabling him to reconstruct a mystery scarcely publishable at the time ('The Treasure of the Black Taj')? Or that its sequel should have involved him in the erotic undercurrents of the contemporary art world ('The Last Pre-Raphaelite')?

Dr. Watson is called upon to attend the execution of a man convicted of murder. Eighteen months after the ordeal, the murder victim is found on a London dock, actually murdered. If this becomes known, the public's faith in the police, the justice system, and the government itself could be in peril. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must join forces with Scotland Yard to secretly uncover the deadly scheme that led to a miscarriage of justice, even as they themselves become targets of murder.

In 1887 on his way to prison, the convicted murderer, Vincent Louder Lovelace, was killed in a horrific collision in London between a police wagon and an omnibus. Though Lovelace never kept his date with the hangman, his accidental death resulted in justice being served. Or so the authorities continued to believe until the arrival at 221B Baker Street of the American author, Julian Hawthorne, son of the famous writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. Julian informs Sherlock Holmes that the dead man is not only alive and well, but also innocent of murder.

As chief spokesperson for St. Benignus University in small-town Erin, Ohio, Jeff Cody's job responsibilities include handling “crisis communications.” And a crisis it is when veteran journalist Maggie Barton calls Jeff on the day after Thanksgiving. She wants the whole story about a dean forced to step down because of complaints of inappropriate behavior from three women who worked for him. But that's just the overture to double murder at SBU, taxing the abilities of larger-than-life amateur sleuth Sebastian McCabe and the police agencies of both town and gown.

As Inspector Lestrade asks "why, gentlemen, would someone break into a house, murder the owner and then steal only one volume of an Australian atlas, when all three volumes were there for the taking," more atlases are stolen before Holmes solves the mystery.
