Das fünfte Buch der Ahnen ist wie das erste in zwei Erzählungen gegliedert. Beide spielen im militärischen Milieu. Die erste Erzählung setzt kurz vor Ende des 30-jährigen Krieges ein und endet mit dem Westfälischen Frieden von 1848. Ein dramatischer Höhepunkt ist die vereitelte Hexenverbrennung einer der Hauptpersonen. Die zweite Erzählung spielt in der Zeit des „Soldatenkönigs“ Friedrich Wilhelm I., der auch persönlich ausführlich in der Geschichte vorkommt. Nach seiner langen Reise durch die Jahrhunderte ist Gustav Freytag schließlich in seinem eigenen angekommen. Die Erzählung Aus einer kleinen Stadt ist weitgehend geprägt durch die kriegerische Auseinandersetzung mit Napoleon. Über „Niedergang und Ende eines großen Despoten“ informiert auch das Hörbuch Napoleon I., vom selben Sprecher vorgelesen und über Audible zugänglich.

Eine Erzählung, die im Jahre 1519, also zwei Jahre nach dem denkwürdigen Thesenanschlag in Wittenberg, anhebt, hat natürlich die heftigen Auseinandersetzungen über die „rechte Lehre“ zu ihrem Hauptgegenstand. Daneben gibt es die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen dem König von Polen und dem Deutschen Orden, die schließlich zur Auflösung desselben führten. Die hauptsächlich handelnde Person ist übrigens nicht der namengebende Marcus König, sondern sein Sohn mit einer bewegenden Liebesgeschichte.
