Francis Bret Harte was born on 25th August 1836 in Albany New York. As a young boy Harte developed an early love of books and reading. He first published at the tender age of 11, his satirical poem ‘Autumn Musings’. Expecting praise he received anything but and later wrote "Such a shock was their ridicule to me that I wonder that I ever wrote another line of verse." By age 13 his formal education was at an end and four years later the family moved to California. It was here that he found the stories and inspiration for the works that would seal his fame across the literary world.

Jewels Davis is in prison, and his son, Jefferson, hasn't been seen for some time. An uneasy calm has come over Doc Strafford. His plan is finally coming to fruition. He is now mayor and has a sheriff to protect the citizens. A detective from the Pinkertons comes in on horseback, and the sheriff detains him, wanting to know who he is. Waldo Emerson announces he is investigating a train robbery. Doc gets in on the tail end of the conversation and informs him he hadn't heard about any train robberies. Over pie and coffee, Detective Emerson confides that women were being abducted from the trains

Jim Morton joins a posse that is hunting his friend Nat Bodine who is accused of robbing a stage and shooting the sheriff.

Johnny O'Day shows up half dead at the Redlin's ranch, is nursed back to health, and given a job. The Redlin's son, Sam, falls in with bad company who plan to rob him.

Chat Lock is trailed to his ranch by a posse who suspect him of shooting a man in the back in a barroom gun fight.

The Sandy Kid, a ranch cowhand, discovers a rock containing gold and a murdered miner while rounding up stray steers.
