Doch die Idylle trügt: Der junge Patrick Randall, als Haussitter im luxuriösesten Anwesen des Tals beschäftigt, wird tot am Wegesrand aufgefunden. Kommissarin Vera Stanhope übernimmt mit ihrem Team die Ermittlungen. Bei der Durchsuchung des Anwesens stoßen sie auf eine zweite männliche Leiche. Die einzige Gemeinsamkeit der zwei Opfer: eine Faszination für seltene Falter.

Ein kleines Städtchen hoch oben im Norden: Dicke Schneeflocken fallen auf Newcastle nieder, Weihnachten steht vor der Tür. Detective Ashworths Vorfreude verfliegt jedoch schnell. Auf dem Heimweg sieht er eine alte Dame tot in der Bahn sitzen, ihr Körper weist Messerstiche auf. Zusammen mit seiner Chefin Vera Stanhope macht er sich auf den Weg nach Northumberland in das kleine Städtchen Mardle, wo die Tote lebte. Die Ermittlungen dort stellen sie vor ein Rätsel. Als eine zweite Leiche gefunden wird, führen auch hier die Spuren zu der kleinen Pension "Harbour Street".

Als in einem Fischerboot die Leiche des Journalisten Jerry Markham entdeckt wird, ruft man Hilfe vom Festland: Anstelle von Jimmy Perez, der noch unter dem Tod seiner Verlobten leidet, soll die junge Willow Reeves auf den Shetlands ermitteln. Trotz seiner Apathie regt sich Widerstand in dem Detective. Die junge Kollegin ist ihm entschieden zu forsch. Das ungleiche Paar begibt sich auf Spurensuche: Markham, Sohn aus reichem Haus, war als Frauenheld bekannt. Er hatte die Inseln nach einem Skandal verlassen müssen. Warum also war er zurückgekehrt?
