On August 28, 2019, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked Queen Elizabeth II to prorogue Parliament. She approved the request. However, there is much more to World War I than Franz Ferdinand’s assassination and the clash of the Entente and Central Powers. It was a conflict deeply rooted in hateful rivalries of the world’s most powerful states, and came as a somewhat logical conclusion to the endless balancing and political maneuvering of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And it would change the course of history forever.

This is the first of a three-part series centering on my personal remembrance of Charan Singh (1916-1990), who was the spiritual leader of Radha Soami Satsang Beas from 1951 to 1990. He was unique in his approach to spirituality since unlike other gurus in the Radhasoami tradition, Faqir was remarkably honest and forthcoming about his limitations. He would often say he could be wrong in his interpretations and asked other Sant Mat gurus to correct him if that was the case.

Jeffrey Kripal’s latest book, The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge, extends his anti-materialist critique. Kripal goes so far as to suggest that “matter may, in fact, be an expression of some kind of cosmic Mind [sic], which expresses itself as the material world through the abstract structures of mathematics and physics.” I find that the examples he cites to support his “trans-materialism” purview to be half-baked and lacking in the necessary attention to detail. This short book is a three-fold critique of Kripal's anti-materialist purview.

Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927) was a distinguished musician, a prolific writer, and a great advocate of Sufi mysticism. I first learned about Khan from a long quote on “abstract sound” that was included in Julian P. Johnson’s famous book, The Path of the Masters (1939). It focused on listening to the inner sound as a spiritual practice and underlined how such was efficacious for uplifting one’s consciousness to higher regions.
