Richard de Burton is a prisoner of his own mind. His past haunts him. He did not complete knights’ training due to physical limitations. Consequently, each time he walks down the endless corridor of his ancestral home, he feels deep despair. Portraits of his knighted and venerated ancestors seem to peer down at him and hiss their condemnation. He would never earn the title of knight of the realm, nor live up to their expectations.

Christopher MacDougall is a simple man, struggling with change and loss while providing for his family in 18th-century Edinburgh, Scotland. But when a stranger offers him the opportunity to earn more money, his life is flipped upside down. Unexplainable things begin to happen and what was once accepted as good fortune quickly turns to adversity.

This collection was first published in 1916 and contains some of Frost’s most famous poems, including "The Road Not Taken", "Hyla Brook", and "Birches". Frost’s dedication reads: "To You - who least need reminding that before this interval of the South Branch under black mountains, there was another interval, the Upper at Plymouth, where we walked in spring beyond the covered bridge; but that the first interval of all was the old farm, our brook interval, so called by the man we had it from in sale."

In 14th-century England, on the day that William Wallace of Scotland was executed, King Edward I knighted one of his faithful warriors, Walter de Burton. At the same time, Sir de Burton’s son, Milton, was a squire to the king and later realized his dream of riding with his father in formation. Christian faith and Scripture passages intersperse this story, along with a warning from Sir de Burton to his son that the church frowned upon anyone other than clergy reading the Holy Scriptures.
