Before the gospels were written, there were proto-gospels, notes, lists, and collections used to construct the gospels we have today. Some gospels were used and built upon to form other, expanded gospels. The “Q” Document was used as a memory tool and literary scaffolding by Matthew and Luke in the writing of their gospels. Although many scholars believe Mark had access to the oldest parts of Q, others believe he did not. Since Mark predates Matthew and Luke, they believe Mark was used as a template for Matthew and Luke.

The book presents the Jewish leaders Judas, Jonathan, and Simon as devout people and has little sympathy for people who favor Hellenization, but nowhere does the text mentions divine intervention. The Septuagint (or "LXX" ) is the Greek version of the Old Testament. It is a translation of the Hebrew Old Testament and certain Apocryphal books, which was written in the late third century BC by the order of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the king of Ptolemaic Egypt (283 BC to 246 BC). Alexander the Great had spread Greek influence and language throughout "the known world" and the Jews of the area were losing their Jewish roots and tongue. This Greek translation was created for use by the Alexandrian Jews who were fluent in Koine Greek, but were no longer fluent in Hebrew.

The number of books in the Bible depends on which Bible is being referenced. Protestant and Catholic churches recognize 27 New Testament books. Protestants recognize 39 books of the Jewish canon in the Old Testament. Roman Catholics hold 46 books of the Old Testament as canon, along with expanded versions of Esther and Daniel.
