Far from the Madding Crowd is Thomas Hardy's fourth novel. It centers on the lives of five characters: Gabriel Oak, Bathsheba Everdene, Mr. Boldwood, Sgt. Troy, and Fanny Robin. The son of a rich widow, he takes a fancy to her and gets her a position as the poultry keeper on his family's estate. However, her good fortune is soon complicated by Alec's libertine ways, and Tess returns home shamed. Once recovered, she separates herself from the gossip by finding work at a dairy farm outside the village.

Eustacia Vye, sensuous and wild as the moors of Egdon Heath, brings nothing but misfortune to her lovers, Damon Wildeve and Clym Yeobright. This, contrasted with the kindness and faithfulness of the reddleman Diggory Venn, Thomasin, and the local furze cutters, all combine to form a gripping tale.
