This novel by John Fox, Jr., narrated by John Michaels, captures the essence of pre coal-mining life in the Eastern Kentucky mountains, isolated since the Revolutionary War, as the residents move into the 20th century. Fox weaves the love story of Hale, an outsider and June Tolliver, a mountain girl against the background of coal companies ravaging the mountains and a 30-year fued between the Tollivers and the Falins.

A blaze breaks out in a fireworks factory near Tom Swift's home, but the fire is even closer to his sweetheart, Mary Nestor's house. Tom and his chum and faithful companion Ned Newton rush to extinguish the conflagration and help rescue victims. Tom and Ned rescue a scientist and chemist who becomes one of the subplots of this thrilling tale of yesteryear. The main plot of the story is based on an idea that strikes Tom as he is fighting the fire: Why not invent an aerial firefighting apparatus? It is this invention that nearly blinds Eradicate, but ultimately sends Tom to rescue Mary Nestor.

This book was originally published in 1912, and attitudes and expressions were different from today, and some may find the language in this material offensive.

Tom Swift in the City of Gold by Victor Appleton, volume 11 of the Tom Swift series, takes us to the wilds of Central Mexico where Tom and his friends discover an underground city of gold. On the verge of becoming billionaires, their plans are thwarted by savage headhunters, and of course Tom's archrival Andy Foger. Please be aware that this book was written over 100 years ago, and may contain language and references that are today politically incorrect, insensitive and inappropriate.

Volume seven of the Tom Swift series brings our hero, Tom Swift, to Phantom Mountain, somewhere in Colorado, in search of a band of rascals who use the power generated in a flash of lightning to create diamonds. Beautiful Joe narrates the story of his mutilation at the hands of a cruel master and the love he finds in the home of a caring family full of kids and animals.

Tom Swift and His Motorcycle is Volume 2 of the original Tom Swift series. In this book, first published in 1910, our hero, the young inventor Tom Swift, buys a motorboat at auction that he "soups up", making it one of the fastest boats on Lake Charlupa. Published in 1939, this book contains 12 articles originally published in Good Housekeeping magazine as a guide to young people of the era to achieve a happy marriage. Many of the principles stated are as applicable today as they were 70 years ago, but some of the chapters are best considered only as amusing historical artifacts.
