Each year, the Nightlords choose a new Emperor to rule Yohuachanca. Delicious food graces his palate. The realm’s most beautiful women fill his vast palace. Four priestesses counsel him in all matters. The life of an emperor is good, luxurious, and short... For at the year’s end, he is sacrificed to the Nightlords under the light of the Scarlet Moon. Iztac is the piss-poor orphan chosen to be this year’s emperor. A sacrifice bound for the altar.

Emperor Iztac is racing against time. He has finally discovered the Nightlords' sinister plan: to use the New Fire Ceremony to raise a sulfur sun that would allow vampires to prey on the living during the day. He has weeks to sabotage the ritual, and no margin of error. But who can he trust in his palace full of spies and traitors?

Iztac's struggle against the Nightlords is now at a turning point. With the failure of their ritual and the loss of one of their own, the vampires have never been more paranoid; none are more suspicious of Iztac than the White Snake, who would see his treachery exposed by all means necessary. And in the Underworld, the trials of Xibalba continue. But there is a light in the darkness. As Iztac's power grows, so does his circle of allies; among whom is his deceased father and all-too-living mother, who each seek to guide him towards a different path.
