Staff Sergeant Eli Vanhorn isn't the man he used to be. Once a proud member of the Fleet Marine Corps' elite Terrestrial Advance Combat teams, the battle on colony planet Luyten C left him broken and scarred. But after a year of surgeries and physical therapy, he's ready to complete his enlistment as Master of Arms on the exploration vessel Rihla. It should be a simple, stress free assignment - but things rarely work out as they should.

The exploration ship Rihla was hit with a powerful planetary defense weapon almost as soon as they made orbit around the planet. With almost no warning, the ship was damaged beyond the ability to save. Staff Sergeant Eli Vanhorn and Corporal Beatrix Finnegan escaped by initiating the armory's emergency ejection capabilities. They have weapons and survival supplies, but it will take months for the Fleet to send help. In the meantime, they have two objectives: Find other survivors and stay alive.

Since being stranded on the planet Leonis B, Staff Sergeant Eli "Van" Vanhorn has worked tirelessly to protect the people he cares about. But his attacks on the Orrkasi aliens who are working to exploit the planet's resources have forced his hand. After the Orrkasi renew their attack on Leonis B, a group of Fleet Navy personnel are abandoned when the fleet armada flees the system. But they aren't alone—a group of Alethians whose ship was destroyed by the Orrkasi, has joined them deep in the underground fortress of Havvar. Everyone is looking for someone to lead them to freedom and victory against overwhelming odds.
