After fleeing the revolution and settling into the craggy cliffs of New Pythos, the dragonlords are eager to punish their usurpers and reclaim their city. Their first order of business was destroying the Callipolan food supply. Now they're coming for the dragonriders. Annie is Callipolis' new Firstrider, charged with leading the war against New Pythos. But with unrest at home, enforcing the government's rationing program risks turning her into public enemy number one.

Annie, the youngest Firstrider in Callipolan history, is tasked with defending her city against the looming threat. But the responsibility weighs heavy – rations are running out, tensions are rising, and every decision she makes could spark rebellion in her own streets. Lee, scarred by betrayal and the price he paid for loyalty, questions where he belongs. Supporting Annie means upholding the system that cost him his family, while joining the rebels means tearing apart the world they fought to build.

In New Pythos, Griff stands trial for treason. His fate seems sealed, but not everyone wants to see him fall. Allies on both sides are scheming to save him, though their plans could cost them dearly. Back in Callipolis, Annie faces her greatest challenge yet: uniting a divided city against a powerful enemy. With famine spreading and the shadow of the triarchy looming, she must prove she’s the leader her people need – before it’s too late. For Lee, revolution is no longer just about dragons and fire.

In New Pythos, Griff is facing an execution by the dragonborn, who are furious at his betrayal.
