أرخ الإمام السيوطي في هذا المؤلف للخلفاء المسلمين. حيث ترجم فيه الخلفاء أمراء المؤمنين القائمين بأمر الأمة من عهد أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه إلى عهده (أي عهد الإمام السيوطي) والذي يعني عهد الدولة العباسية. حيث جاء التاريخ مرتباً على زمانهم الأول فالأول، وقد ذكر في ترجمة كل منهم ما وقع في أيامه من الحوادث المستغربة، ومن كان في أيامه من أئمة الدين وأعلام الأمة.
