My Year in Vietnam takes Phillip I. Elkins, a.k.a. Señor Felipe, from getting on the plane to Vietnam and the shock of arrival in Vietnam and seeing the cargo hold of the plane being loaded with GIs in caskets. From there he is assigned to his unit, at first in Saigon, where he meets some of the locals and gets involved with them. Then he’s sent up into the Central Highlands with the 1st Cavalry Division as a preventive medicine specialist under a Sergeant Sidell, who hates draftees, which of course, is what Elkins is.

Phillip I. Elkins, a.k.a. Señor Felipe, is a storyteller, salsa maker, father, son, educator, author, musician, and radio host of "LA Sounds" on KZFR, Chico, California. Running from the Fire is a coming-of-age story that begins with a skinny, nearsighted Jewish kid trying to find a home and identity among white and Latino peers in East Los Angeles, an emotional voyage that takes him through love affairs and fistfights and ends with him drafted by the Army and en route to Vietnam. The book is intense, frequently funny, and deeply poignant as he describes his youth and adolescence.

This is two stories in one. The first is about my two daughters, Daniela and Selena, living half time with their mother, Anna, and half time with me, their father. The second is about my son, Isaac, also living half time with his mother, Joni, and half time with me, his father. Anna and I broke up before the younger girl was two years old. Joni and I broke up when Isaac was two. Both stories describe the adventures of single parenting.
