Nachdem einige schreckliche Geheimnisse ans Tageslicht gelangt sind, müssen die Menschen ihr Verhältnis zu den Akkato neu überdenken. Werden sich Dominic Porter und seine Kameraden dazu entschließen neue Allianzen zu schmieden, auch wenn das bedeuten mag gegen das Gewissen zu handeln.

Nach dem fehlgeschlagenen Angriff auf die Welt Barathan, flüchten sich Zurak und seine Gefolgsleute auf einen entlegenen Stützpunkt, inmitten eines riesigen Ozeans. Schon bald finden Dominic Porter und seine Kameraden heraus, dass die scheinbar so wohlgesonnenen Akkato dort ein schreckliches Geheimnis hüten.

Am 21. Februar des Jahres 4589 erfolgt der Kontakt mit den Außerirdischen. Doch statt Frieden und Freiheit zu bringen, führen die rivalisierenden Keymon und Akkato ihren eigenen Krieg auf dem Schlachtfeld Erde. Die Akkato jedoch wissen die Ausdauer und Zähigkeit der Menschen zu schätzen und für sich zu nutzen. So beginnt für Dominic Porter, der mit etwas Glück auf einem der Schiffe der Akkato anheuern kann, ein Abenteuer, das ihn auf fremde Welten führt.

Nach der Katastrophe auf Dostra geraten Dominic und seine Freunde in die Dienste des Akktao-Admirals Zurak Mestray. Bei ihm handelt es sich um einen der Söhne des Akkatofürsten Ulan Mestray, dem Dominic die erfolgreiche Flucht von der Erde Möglichkeit zu verdanken hat. Zurak lässt die Menschen zu Gardisten ausbilden, die ihn auf seinen Feldzügen begleiten und beschützen sollen. Doch der ehrgeizige Fürstensohn verfolgt eigennützige Ziele, die für die Menschen und das Volk der Akkato den Untergang bedeuten könnten.

Die Vorbereitungen eine Kriegerelite zu erschaffen, sind in vollem Gange. Eine Kampfeinheit unter dem Kommando der Akkato, in der ausschließlich Menschen dienen sollen. Auch wenn Dominic diesem Plan nur widerwillig zugestimmt hat, bietet er doch die einzige Überlebensmöglichkeit für die sterbene Menschheit. Es scheint sogar, als seien die Menschen die letzte Hoffnung für die pferdeköpfigen Akkato. Auch die Keymon haben das offenbar erkannt und nehmen die Erde ins Visier.

Nachdem die Mission der Zora ein unvermitteltes Ende gefunden hat, beschließt Dominic Porter, der Flotte den Rücken zu kehren und ein neues Leben zu beginnen. Zusammen mit Ellena Green und Monica Simmons macht er sich auf den Heimweg, zurück zu seiner Familie. Doch die Reise birgt unzählige Gefahren, mit denen weder er, noch seine beiden Begleiterinnen rechnen konnten.

Dostra ist eine Bergbauwelt mit extremen Wetterbedingungen. Es herrscht ein Winter, mit Kälteperioden von minus 180 Grad Celsius und ein Sommer, in dem die Temperaturen Blei zum Schmelzen bringen können. Schwer bewaffnet, stehen Dominic und seine Kameraden den Arbeitern der Akkatos zu Seite. Diese werden immer wieder von Keymon angegriffen und benötigen den Schutz der Menschen, die die Gegenwart der Keymon spüren können. Der Winter geht zu ende und die Schneeschmelze beginnt. Eine turbulente Zeit, von Springfluten und Feuerstürmen, die den Planeten überziehen.

Versteck gesucht, Liebe gefunden. Letty und Maya, ihre vierjährige Nichte, müssen nach einem Schicksalsschlag ganz neu anfangen: Ihr altes Leben haben sie zurückgelassen, im sonnigen Florida suchen die beiden nach einem neuen Zuhause. Übergangsweise landen sie in einer kleinen Pension am Strand. Je mehr Letty und Maya sich dort einleben und an die eigenwilligen Stammgäste gewöhnen, desto schwerer fällt es ihnen, wieder zu gehen. Auch Joe, der häufiger in der Pension nach dem Rechten sieht, kann sich sein Leben bald nicht mehr ohne sie vorstellen. Aber Letty muss sich erst ihrer dunklen Vergangenheit stellen.
