Detective Superintendent Harriet Martens resolves to resign after the new assistant chief constable at the head of the CID makes her feel inferior in her job. However, her thoughts of resignation are abruptly interrupted when the pro-hunting politician Robert Roughouse suspiciously collapses during one of his vehement speeches at an antihunting demonstration. Sensing that someone has deliberately attempted to murder Roughouse, and seeing an opportunity to prove her worth to the ACC, Detective Martens determinedly takes charge of the investigation.

Harriet Martens, named ‘The Hard Detective’ by the media because of her unrelenting opposition to every sort of evil-doing, has been secretly summoned to London to investigate corruption in the country’s most prestigious crime-fighting team, the elite Maximum Crimes Squad. And she suddenly finds herself under fire. Not only is she opposed at every turn by the head of the Squad, but she is menaced by other, more mysterious, figures.

For London the worst has happened. There have been riots, uncontrolled fires, outbreaks of savage looting, artillery battles, mass flights. The great city lies three parts deserted, open to marauding gangs and beast-wild individuals, its highways and landmarks tumbled like ruined temples. To Mark, comparatively safe in less troubled Highgate, there comes a message that his estranged wife is dying in Wimbledon, right across on the far side of the dangerous bowl of the devastated city.

Who wanted him? What for? Why was Roger Farrar (if that was his name) on the run in Dublin? Was he a traitor and deserted? The innocent target of a kidnap plot? Or a lonely persecuted paranoiac? One thing is certain: he is likely to suffer a fate worse than death if he is caught by the gross villain who specialises in brain-washing.

Luckily, or unluckily, for him his work falls under the unsparing scrutiny of Mrs Craggs, the charlady.

It is Inspector Ghote's bad luck to be landed with the case of the perfect murder at the start of his career with the Bombay Police, for in this most baffling of crimes there is the cunning and important tycoon Lala Varde to contend with. And as if this were not enough, he finds himself having to investigate the mysterious theft of one rupee from the desk of yet another very important person, the minister of Police Affairs and the Arts.

Dummerweise ist besagte Gattin schon fünfzehn Jahre tot und niemand in der Kleinstadt hat die geringste Lust, sich mit dem örtlichen Machthaber anzulegen, der vor keinem Mittel zurückschreckt, um Ghote zu stoppen. Und dann tritt auch noch ein heiliger Mann in den Hungerstreik und wiegelt die Bewohner auf, damit Ghote endlich abreist.

Es sieht zunächst ganz harmlos aus: Inspector Ghote soll nach Kalkutta reisen, dort einen Meisterverbrecher in Empfang nehmen und ihn nach Bombay eskortieren. Aber weil Ghote die Gelegenheit nutzen und aus der Reise einen Kurzurlaub machen will, nimmt er den Zug. Das hätte er besser nicht getan, denn seine Mitreisenden stellen sich schon bald als äußerst seltsam heraus. Die Reise quer durch Indien wird sehr, sehr aufregend.

Kindesentführung in Bombay. "Keine Polizei!", fordern die Erpresser. Aber weil Detective Inspector Ghote so unauffällig und gar nicht wie ein Polizeibeamter aussieht, wird er in die elegante Penthousewohnung des reichen Fabrikanten Manibhai Desai geschickt, um dabeizusein, wenn die Kidnapper anrufen. Da stellt sich heraus, dass die Entführer das falsche Kind erwischt haben: Desais Sohn hatte mit Pidku, dem Sohn des Schneiders, im Spiel die Kleider getauscht.

Ein filmreif in Szene gesetzter Mord erschüttert die berühmten Bollywood-Filmstudios von Bombay. Für einmal ist der Mord nämlich echt und endet äußerst tödlich. Das prominente Opfer: Indiens gefeierter Leinwandschurke Dhartiraj, ein Superstar. Detective Inspector Ghote sieht endlich seine Chance gekommen, sich als genialer Starermittler in der High-Society einzuführen. Doch hinter den Kulissen dieser eitlen Welt voll Glanz und Glamour lauern tausend Fallstricke auf den arglosen Aspiranten.
