Throughout history, African-American women have played a vital and often overlooked role in both the suffrage and civil rights movements in the United States. Their contributions were integral to the very structure and progress of each movement.

Throughout history, African American musicians and artist have made a profound impact in music, they have given sound and voice through a wide variety of musical genres. Universally they have expressed emotions that is shared through faith, passion, joy, comfort, and injustice through songs that speaks directly to the heart and spirit. The incredible men and woman featured in this book are responsible for creating some of the most iconic songs ever recorded in the history of music.

During Black History Month, we pause to salute and reflect on the contributions African-Americans have made to the rich fabric that makes up the United States. There are many untold stories that reveal the best of Americans who stepped up when duty called, broke through barriers, or quietly made their communities better one person at a time.

The month of February has marked the celebration of Black History Month for more than half a century, an observance that highlights the achievements of African Americans. The yearly commemoration might not exist today if it were not for educator and historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who devoted most of his life to shining a light on the accomplishments of African Americans throughout history. Known as the Father of Black History, Woodson was motivated by contemporary historians who had tendencies to conceal historical contributions made by African Americans from the history books.
