The snow is piling up in Emerald Valley, and so are Wyle’s enemies. While dealing with the repair and rejuvenation of his newest vassal, Sparkling Bay, Wyle learns that two of his Appointed have been taken prisoner during what was supposed to be a simple trading route. The Diplomat sent by King Griffin is more monster than man. He serves as an intermediary between the King and his inhuman allies. After taking up residence to the west of Emerald Valley and holding Yan and Shareese hostage, the man sends Wyle his demands.

Jake is more powerful than ever, but can he save Aether, his mother, and his estranged brother at the same time? The man who started everything, Jake’s father, is undercover as a visiting scholar. He threatens Jake’s mother and works in the shadows to broker a deal that would make him Headmaster of his own school, but what is he really after?

Despite being instrumental to the defense of Aether Academy, Jacob Pratts identity as a Shadow and a fraud lands him in prison. Jake will stand trial under Theid's replacement, Headmaster Doriah. She's ready to make a name for herself as the school begins to rebuild, and that means making an example of the Shadows and Knights who were captured during Aether Academy's assault. There are two options: exorcism and execution. Will cutting him off from the dark god Vethris be enough, or will the school decide to put Jake down for good?

Tensions rise in Aether Academy as cultists from the Knights of Eradication gather at its border. Angry protests threaten to turn into something much more dangerous, and an outside influence seems to fuel their confidence. Meanwhile, a mysterious patron approaches Jake with a job for the Shadows. All he needs to do is help take down one of the most powerful mages in the world. Jake needs to balance his priorities. He searches for a way to break his ties to the dark God Vethris, develops his own fighting style as he chooses his next round of classes, and adds a new member to the study group.

An attack on one of his wives sends Wyle into full alert. He finds himself untrusting of the new arrivals that might help Emerald Valley become a true castle town.
